2017 Highlights

•  Book / Writing News:

•   Updated and upgraded Food & Provisions of the Mountain Men: A Guide to Authentic Provisions of Fur Trappers, Traders and Explorers in the Early American West with a new cover and triple the number of pages.

•   Garnered top honors in the Best Unpublished Short Story category in the San Diego Book Awards for By the Light of the Moon, a story about a moonshiner suspected of murder.

•  More Book News: Edited a number of books over the past year, some of which were published and received recognition, and which you might enjoy:

  • Butcher's Bill by Martin Hill, named Best Mystery/Suspense novel for 2017 by the Annual Best Independent Book Awards.
  • Pursuit by Indy Quillen, whose preceding novel, Tracker, was a finalist in the SDBA Best Published Mystery category (and should have won).
  • The Search for Diego by E. Paul Bergeron — historical novel set in pre-gold rush California; second book in A Land in Turmoil series.
And watch for these books coming in 2018:

•  Music Arena: During a lull in Janis's globe-trotting bird trips (Arizona, Chile) we attended the Arkansas Folk Festival in Mountain View, met some fine musicians, and had a lot of fun making music. Afterward, we visited the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.
In August, we attended the Summergrass bluegrass festival and enjoyed the fine music of Sideline as well as Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, featuring Megan Lynch Chowning on fiddle.
